Free Christmas Play Scripts for Primary Schools
Choosing the school Christmas play is hard when you can only see a blurb. So here are the opening scenes of three original plays, free to read in full. Read one with your class and you'll soon see whether it suits them.
Which play suits your children?
Ages 2 to 5: Who's Coming to the Stable?
A gentle narrated nativity for nursery, preschool and Reception. A grown-up tells the story and the children join in with short group lines and action songs to tunes they already know, so nobody has to read.

Ages 7 to 11: Christmas Is Cancelled!
Not a nativity, so it works for any school, club or drama group. Santa reads one complaint too many and cancels Christmas, and Year 6 have to change his mind. The full play has 9 scenes and 38 speaking parts, with big comic leads and plenty of one to three line parts for less confident readers.

How to test a play in one lesson
- Read the free scene aloud together and swap parts halfway through, so more children get a go.
- Ask who wants a big part and who would rather have one or two funny lines.
- Listen for the jokes that land. If your class laughs in a read-through, an audience will too.
- Count your cast before you commit, including the children who would rather work backstage.
Only got 15 minutes to fill rather than a whole show? Try our school Christmas assembly ideas instead.
