The Good Person Test (Ebook)

Be good. Be seen. What about the kindness nobody counts? After the riots, the government of New Concord brings in the Good Person Index. Every kind act, verified by camera, by an app or by a teacher, earns points. Points mean cheaper buses, quicker doctors' appointments, and a better place on the housing list. Harriet Lennox has spent twenty years teaching children to be kind. When the Index comes to her primary school, she thinks it's the best idea a politician has ever had. Then the children learn where the cameras are. Her cleverest pupil, Ben, does forty small good deeds a day in front of them to get his family out of a flat full of mould, and stops when a camera breaks. A girl is rewarded for reporting a classmate's panic attack as aggression. And the school caretaker, the kindest man Harriet knows, who has walked other people's children home and paid their dinner money for thirty years, has the lowest score in the school and is being monitored for low engagement.
