The Last Private Place (Ebook)

Nothing in this room is recorded. Everything outside it is. Ardent is the most watched city in the country. Cameras on every street, sensors in every ceiling, a phone, a watch and a smart speaker listening to everyone, all the time. It looks after you. Crime has halved. There is one exception. Architect Tomas Kerridge designed it: the privacy room. Three metres square, lined with copper so no signal gets in or out, protected by law. No cameras, no microphones, no sensors. People use them to cry, to pray, to make phone calls nobody can hear. Somewhere to be nobody. Then a man dies in one, and the city asks Tomas to make them safer. It gives him a login to see the data around the rooms. The city has never put a camera inside a privacy room. It doesn't need to. It has been watching the doors, and working out exactly what everyone does behind them. THE LAST PRIVATE PLACE: a novella of privacy, silence and surveillance.
