The Unemployable Man (Ebook)

They decided his future when he was seven. Now it's his daughter's turn. Every child in England sits the Career Potential Assessment at seven. It predicts their future, and it's almost never wrong. Noah Flint was Band E: Low Potential, Unsettled. Recommended investment level: Minimal. Twenty-five years later he's a night-shift picker in a Stoke warehouse, and every job he's ever really wanted has turned him down in seconds: his predicted pathway does not justify the training investment. Then his daughter Amelia brings home her own envelope. Amelia reads three books a week and takes toasters apart to see how they work. Her band is D: retail, hospitality, care. Noah can't believe it about her. So he starts to wonder whether it was ever true about him, and asks for his original file. In it is a note from his Year 3 teacher that nobody was allowed to act on, and a line that explains everything: the test was never measuring what children could become. It was measuring what the country was willing to spend on them. THE UNEMPLOYABLE MAN: a novella of fathers, daughters and second chances. Complete and standalone, from ThextonLabs.
