Your Mother's Second Life (Ebook)

The village was virtual. Her past was not. When eighty-two-year-old Evelyn Price stops talking after a fall, her daughter Helen buys her a subscription to Haven, a virtual village for older people, with a green, a tea room and a gardening club. Within a month, Evelyn is happier than Helen has seen her in thirty years. Then she starts talking about Arthur. He walks her home from the tea room. He knows all the birds. He calls her Evie, a name nobody has ever used. And he remembers a factory in Leeds, a ballroom on New Year's Eve 1964, and a girl called Kath, none of which Helen has ever heard of. Helen assumes Arthur is just software. But when she traces where his memories come from, she finds a shoebox she never looked at properly, a cassette tape from 1965, a dead man's voice in an old archive, and a newspaper report of an inquest where her mother told a lie that changed two lives. She expects a confession. Instead, her mother asks her a question: why does Helen believe a parent's life belongs to their children?
